. >> we've got to break n.breaking news right now on comcast, the cable giant purchasing ge's remaining stake in nbc universal. let get right now to julia boorstin with the very latest. julia. >> that's right, maria. huge news here. comcast is purchasing the remainder of nbc universal which is cnbc's parent company from general electric. comcast did reserve the right to make the rest of this purchase when they announced the original deal but this is coming earlier than expected. now, comcast will be paying $16.7 billion for ge's common equities stake in the company. in addition, nbc universal will pay ge 1.4 billion for the properties it uses at 30 rock as well as cnbc's new jersey headquarters. here's where comcast is getting the money. $11.4 billion will be in cash, $4 billion in unsecured notes issued to ge, and there will also be $2 billion in bank credit facilities. now why is comcast doing the rest of this purchase earlier than expected? comcast sees -- says that it sees a lot more opportunity than nbc universal now that they are familiar with the business. pointing to the fact th

purchase that stake, in addition to a note taken back by ge. it's also a story of cheap money. you've got cash on the balance sheet. borrowing from the markets at extraordinarily low rates. we were still somewhat surprised, i have to say, because there was an expectation it would still perhaps kick in next year. they had seven years in which to actually do this. there's also a somewhat complicated part of the transaction that was -- from when it was closed a couple of years ago when comcast equity ecreted over time. perhaps that was used in leverage in the negotiation for the price. gives them a lot more money to return to shareholders should they choose to do so. >> it's rare you see a deal happen in both stocks move sharply higher. this is really a story, it's transformation al for general electric. right now it is more beneficial for the company to trade purely as an industrial/financial. those are the sweet spots in the market during this rally. for comcast, they're using, as david mentioned, money that was sitting on the balance sheet, not earning much, and locking in a price at

? has ge made a decision that went too far in that direction? >> i do not think about it in terms of off-shoring re-shoring. i think of it in terms of competitiveness. there are two different things. one is globalization. globalization is where you go try to sell your product to people who are buying them. that means you get to add capability to the company. i was in four countries in africa. each could be $1 billion in the near future. you may have 70% of the content in the u.s. and 30% locally. globalization is not a bad thing. it gets lumped and cast. it is a thing called outsourcing. that was a lot of what happened in the 1980's and 1990's. virtually everything we have done has been how to access local markets. when you look back on manufacturing and looking at putting it in different places, the record is mixed. a lot of it has not worked. for a variety of reasons. supply chain reasons. innovation reasons. when i look at the vast majority of what ge makes, we want the manufacturing close to the innovators. we want to be close to the markets we sell to. does that mean a vast majo

is we do want overweight equities. liz: overweight equities. okay, you are picking two big names, ge and at&t. not exactly earth shattering. if there is a common threat, what is it, and what you really like about these? >> i like the fact that they are big large name companies that are well situated in the market. we know is we love to beat diversified across the globe, 44 different countries over 12,000 different stocks. this happens to be 5%. they both have great dividends, at&t is 5.1%, ge is over 3%. they are paying you to hold it. so in my opinion, you need to have these very diversified multinationals and the portfolio so that you can capture them on the outside of the market. you also have to be careful about the bona fides of the market. also another area that we are looking at and investing into is the bond market as well. it's a great way to add to the portfolio. liz: kimberly floss, brian, thank you so much. there's a new report showing medicare $44 billion out in improper payments last year. yes, you heard this -- fraud and waste and abuse. find out what else this report

those levels. ge's earnings stream is more industrial and less financially oriented. and i like the fact it has gigantic international exposure. looking for dividend boosts and buybacks that will close the value gap between the ge of 12 years ago and the ge stock of today. it's too cheap to stay down here much longer. it's going to help the dow. all right. now who's been keeping us back? i mean, who's been hurting the call? and can those stocks turn themselves around and power the dow well past the all-time highs? did they keep us back? looking at the bottom five, i see some stocks that could give us oomph, but others that might not cooperate. the fifth one that's pulled us down, i'm going from real bad to horrible since the generational bottom in 2009 is alcoa. that's gained only 58% from the bottom. i have no problem envisioning at a much higher price but it traded $18 in 2010 after the bottom, a far cry from the $47 level. stock's at $8, wow, that's a current bottom, right, and that's what we're seeing. nevertheless, don't look for alcoa to give you any near term help unless it g
